Road Access: Good to Trailhead. The last 1/4-mi to summit is a bushwhack over steep terrain and fallen trees, undergrowth dense in areas. High-clearance 2WD okay to the recommended parking area. Access: East from Yacolt on Sunset Falls Rd which turns into FR42. Travel the pot-holed FR42 until it intersects with FR53. Then travel NW for about 1/2-mi until the next intersection and a rock quarry. FR5304 is not marked but is the eastern most road. Travel about 1/2 mi NE then park at the "Y" fork in the road. The road to the summit TH becomes overgrown with roadside trees. ATV or a trailbike would take you the next 1 mi to the trailhead. Note: The DeLorme Atlas road maps are NOT accurate. The Nat'l Geo Topo #822 map is accurate. I also used CalTopo to confirm. Trailhead at 45.8613, -122.1291. Elev: 4157 at the TH. Waypoint the TH and the summit. Important: Use of a GPS is a must for this hike. The 1/4-mi to the summit is a bushwhack thru sometimes dense undergrowth and fallen timber. On the return trip, it would be VERY easy to follow the terrain which slopes to the north and consequently missing the trailhead. Waypoint the start lat/longs for the TH for a successful return. The grassy summit has great views of Mt Hood and Mt Adams to the south. Views north are tree obscured. The terrain steeply drops to the east and south. Views of Silver Star Mtn and Portland/Vancouver beyond to the southwest.
