Green Peak is a 2717’ summit that is west of Bellfountain, OR.  It looked inviting on the topo maps, so I traced out a route and headed out (coming from my failed activation of 3060 that same morning).

Bellfountain is south of Philomath and Corvallis, OR. There is an intersection in Bellfountain with Dawson Rd.  Take Dawson Rd west.  In 2.9 miles, you will find yourself in the middle of Hull Oakes lumber mill and the town of Dawson.  What a dump!  It reminds me of poor coal mining towns in West Virginia.  The road through town is dirt, and the whole place is grimy looking.  Anyway, drive on through the place and head south on South Fork Rd.  Stay to the right.  In 0.5 miles past the mill, there is an intersection that has a right turn that heads up steeply.  Stay on the lower road.  Basically, follow the main track. At 2 miles past the mill, there is an intersection at which you stay right, steeply uphill.  In another 0.25 miles there is an intersection with three choices. My topo map only showed two choices.  The middle fork going uphill is the one that the map indicates ultimately will get you to Green Peak.

Unfortunately, that choice has a yellow gate across it.  There is no sign, so one could park there (if you feel comfortable doing that) and walk toward the summit.  Hopefully that road would reach the target - the map doesn’t match the roads.  It looks like that walk would be about 2 miles or so, with 1500’ of elevation gain.  It was muddy, and light rain showers were coming and going.  I decided that this should be left for another day.

Strike 2!  So, back toward home and a summit that I know better.
