Reservation Divide

Summit 7112, Montana | June 2021

Summit

Summit 7112 is at the head of Ninemile Creek and overlooks the Clark Fork valley to the north. It is a pleasant hike on cooler summer days.  The on-trail and off-trail are currently exposed with very little tree cover. It will remain open until lodgepole pine regeneration grows for another decade or two.  The summit offers good views of the Mission Mountains and summits of the Reservation Divide.  Snags are abundant so exercise caution especially on windy days.

Hike miles roundtrip:  1 on-trail #98 and 1 mile off-trail

Montana - Three Lakes Peak 27July2019

Summit

Three Lakes Peak is just within the Flathead Indian Reservation along the Reservation Divide. The summit has great views of the Confederate Salish-Kootenai Tribes land, the Flathead River, three alpine lakes, the Mission Mountains and the Ninemile Valley.  A Flathead Reservation Use Permit is required.

Two routes are described.  The Alternate route is shorter, but much steeper and nearly double the elevation gain.  The Reservation DivideTrail is good, but in some meadow crossings it is easy to lose the trail due to forb and grass overgrowth.

Montana - Blackrock Peak 5July2018

Blackrock Peak is named for the dark gray to black lichens growing on the summit boulder field.  The rock itself is mostly light tan-colored and from a distance the dark lichen patterns appear like large stationary cloud shadows draped over the summit and adjoining ridges. Distance views include the rugged Mission Mountains, the Bitterroot Mountains, the Cabinet Mountains and on clear days Flathead Lake and Glacier National Park.
