A PCT SOTA Summit

Peak 4620, OR | May 2014

When the snow is gone, this is a easy two point summit not far off of Highway 26 east of Mount Hood.

A bit past milepost 63 and just before Blue Box Pass there is a right turn onto two forest roads - take the right one (pictured). A carefully driven passenger car might be able to navigate this road, but having high clearance would make it easier. And the distances are reasonably short so parking when the road gets too rough and walking a mile or so on a forest road could be an option.

Goat Peak - W7W/MC-026 – 13 October, 2013

Goat Peak is located east of the Cascade Crest.  Myself, partner Ms Pat WT7N, and Bro Mike drove 19 miles east of Chinook Pass on Hiway 410 to one of the three Goat Peak THs.  Our TH is located directly across the highway from the Hells Crossing Camp Ground.  Garmin said that the distance to the summit was 3.2 miles with an elevation gain of 3000 ft.  BTW, we did not take the http://www.wta.org/go-hiking/hikes/goat-peak-1  recommended route.

Activation of "The Twins", Deschutes Co., Oregon 10.5.2013

"The Twins" is a nice activation target just north of Hwy 58, east of Oakridge, Oregon. We took off 10/4 from the Willamette valley in dense fog and headed towards the Cascades to find the fog clearing by the time we reached Oakridge.  The big soaking rains from the Chinese typhoon blown our way had no doubt left some snow so I checked several SNOTEL sites and found that very little snow had fallen and none was currently recorded at any of the sites I checked. Apparently, "The Twins" never bothered to check with the SNOTEL sites.

First Activation of Norse Peak, Pierce / King County Line, Washington.

Beautiful hike on sunny but cool day with my wife, Sharon and Dexter the dog.  Enough breeze / wind to keep us cool and the bugs away.  This is a trail hike up to summit of Norse Peak, 6,858 feet elevation.  Trail is about 10.6 miles round trip, with 2,800 feet +/- elevation gain.

The views are amazing!: Mount Rainier; Mount Adams; Mount Stuart & Enchantments; Central Cascade peaks all around, including Crystal Mountain Ski Resort.
